No visit to the Bay of Fundy is complete without taking a trip to see its best known and loved inhabitants – the whales. Most common now is the North Atlantic Right Whale, an endangered species once hunted to near extinction as it was the ‘right’ whale to hunt. Other visitors include the humpback, finback and minke whales as well as atlantic white sided dolphins and harbour porpoises. Basking shark and tuna can also often be seen.

As most of the whale watching tours depart from Grand Manan Island, it is a day trip from St Martins. Grand Manan is reached by means of a passenger/car ferry, which leaves from Black’s Harbour e very two hours from 7.30am until 5.30, the last o ne leaving at 9.30pm. Tickets are not required for the outward journey, but must be purchased for the return trip to the mainland.

Whales n Sails Adventures offer a 4-5 hour tour on a 60ft. sailing yacht, the ‘Elsie Menota’, which also includes ‘all you want’ coffee, tea and hot chocolate throughout the voyage, plus a meal of hot fish chowder with fresh bread. This is a wonderful way to watch the whales and the seabirds, with just the sound of the wind in the sails and the lapping of the sea against the sides of the boat.
